Getting into the action: GoPro unveils Hero 5

A hero’s welcome

Months of speculations about what GoPro’s latest flagship devices would be like ended on September 19th when founder and CEO, Nicholas Woodman, officially announced the birth of the new “Heros”, the Hero 5 Session and Hero 5 Black.

Setting the standards

What makes Hero 5 the best GoPro ever? Let the specs speak for themselves.

1. Camera – Hero 5 Black is equipped with a 12-megapixel camera and Hero 5 Session has a 10-megapixel shooter. Despite the slight difference, both can take 4K videos at 30 frames per second. Let us also not forget about the electronic image stabilization upgrade that saves everyone from the pain of getting blurry shots of their extreme adventures.

2. Screen – The 2-inch touchscreen display at the back of Hero 5 Black allows you to trim your footage on the spot. The screen also serves as a navigation panel to access the other functions and settings of the device. This feature, however, is not present in Hero 5 Session.

3. Multilingual – Nope. Hero 5 does not speak in tongues — although it might eventually do — but it has a built-in voice control that supports 7 languages including English, German, French, Italian, Spanish, and Chinese.

4. Cloud-connected – Unlike the first set of action cams in the Hero series: Hero 5 Black and Hero 5 Session are connected to GoPro Plus, the cloud storage service where your photos and videos will be automatically uploaded. As long as the cameras are connected to a network.

5. “Natively waterproof” – If you can dive deep with the Hero 4, Hero 5 can take you 33-feet deeper even without a protective case.
