Millinery is for millennials, too

For most millennials, a fedora is an operating system while a cloche is a French dessert. You can’t blame them, though. Hats were part and parcel of everyday dressing for both men and women only up to the 1960s, fashion historians say. Since then, hats have been viewed largely as an accessory you wear only on few occasions. If on a normal day you wear a hat that matches your dress, you’re probably a member of the British royal family.

But really, you don’t need to be a queen to enjoy hats. Hats can be great everyday accessories, no matter what you do or what age group you belong to. For instance, a beret can instantly give your outfit an artsy touch, not to mention it keeps the wind from messing your hair.

Now, if you’re looking for that hat that fits your wardrobe as well as your personality, you can start the search at the collections of these five hat designers:

Eugenia Kim

The newsboy cap trend during the early 2000s was partly because of Eugenia Kim. It was her who designed the newsboy caps and fedoras worn by Jennifer Lopez and Christina Aguilera in their music videos that time. Today, her floppy-brimmed hats with black bows have become a staple accessory for the stylish bohemian set.  Although Kim’s hat designs today are less flamboyant than they were in the late 90s,  the whimsy of her early days remains: she accents her felt and fur hats with pompoms, lace trims, even cat ears.

Celebrities Jennifer Lopez and Christina Aguilera have worn Kim’s hats.

Philip Treacy

Perhaps no other designer can elevate hats to a showstopper status like a wedding gown at the end of a runway show than Philip Treacy. Quirky and over-the-top, Treacy’s avant-garde designs have attracted mavericks like designer John Galliano and Lady Gaga. Besides the bespoke hats and fascinators he makes for England’s royalty and Hollywood celebrities, Treacy also has a mass-market line, which, despite being fast-fashion, still reflects the Irish designer’s playful sensibility.

Treacy’s hats and headpieces are artworks in themselves.

Christine A. Moore

In the US, derbies are as much an occasion to watch fast thoroughbreds race each other as a pageant for the hats worn by the spectators. In these runway-by-the-race-tracks, one name dominates. Christine A. Moore is best known for the wide-brimmed, big-bowed, and brightly-colored derby hats reminiscent of that ornate one worn by Audrey Hepburn in the movie My Fair Lady. The festive vibe isn’t lost even in her hats for everyday wear, which she accents with luxe details like net veils and jeweled chains.

Wearing a Christine A. Moore hat is like betting at the races: go big or go home.

Helene Berman

Helene Berman was already an established name in British women’s fashion when she ventured into hatmaking. Berman has a knack for making classic womenswear fun. Her women’s jackets are done in luxurious fabrics with animal prints and sequins. In the same way, her hats have decidedly old-school shapes but she decorates them with pompoms, appliques, and faux pearls.
